INSPIRE
What is INSPIRE?
INSPIRE is a measure for use in mental health services, to assess the service user’s experiences of the support they receive from a mental health worker for their recovery.
It is rated by the service user, and has two sub-scales: Support and Relationships. The 21-item Support sub-scale asks if particular types of recovery support are important to the person, and how much this type is supported by their mental health worker. The 8-item Relationships sub-scale asks about the relationship between the service user and the mental health worker.
The development process of INSPIRE
INSPIRE has been developed as part of the REFOCUS Study, a research programme focussed on developing a recovery orientation in adult mental health services in England. The Programme Co-ordinator is Mary Leamy, and the Principal Investigator is Mike Slade. The lead researcher for INSPIRE is Julie Williams. INSPIRE was developed with support from a service user-researcher (Yan Weaver) and two researchers in the REFOCUS Study (Vicky Bird and Clair Le Boutillier).
How was INSPIRE developed?
INSPIRE is conceptually based on the Refocus Conceptual Framework of Recovery. It has undergone consultation with various stakeholders including service users, clinical staff, academics, and researchers and a pilot study has been done with people currently using services. It is currently (April 2010) undergoing a validation process to investigate feasibility, construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability and sensitivity to change. It is also being used in the REFOCUS Trial - further information here.
Using INSPIRE
The current version of INSPIRE (Version 3) is being validated so should be treated as a preliminary version. It is copyrighted and cannot be changed. You do not need a licence to use INSPIRE Version 3, and it can be freely used for teaching, research or clinical purposes, provided :
- The content is not changed
- You email us to let us know of your planned use so that we can send you the validated version once it is finalised.
INSPIRE Version 3 can be downloaded here.
